We are the Dance: Cinema, Death and the Imaginary in the Thought of Edgar Morin.Lorraine Mortimer - 2001 - Thesis Eleven 64 (1):77-95.
A colleague of Roland Barthes at the CNRS in the 1950s and cowriter and friend of Cornelius Castoriadis until the latter's death, Edgar Morin has until recently been too little known in the English-speaking world. In an oeuvre that spans half a century, attempting to combine in ongoing dialogue the `humanities' and `sciences', Morin has written on scientific method, fundamental anthropology, politics, contemporary life and popular culture. He is an advocate of `complex' thought, thought which does not reduce, (...)

Computational and Theoretical Analysis of the Association Between Gender and HSV-2 Treatment Adherence.A. Mhlanga & S. Mushayabasa - 2020 - Acta Biotheoretica 69 (2):117-149.
Herpes simplex virus type 2 is the most prevalent sexually transmitted infection in the world, despite the availability of effective anti-viral treatments. A mathematical model to explore the association between gender and HSV-2 treatment adherence is developed. Threshold parameters are determined and stabilities analyzed. Sensitivity analysis of the reproduction number and the numerical simulations suggest that treatment adherence for both females and males are equally important in keeping the reproduction as low as possible. The basic model is then extended to (...)

    Towards a Historical Notion of ‘Turing—the Father of Computer Science’.Edgar G. Daylight - 2015 - History and Philosophy of Logic 36 (3):205-228.
In the popular imagination, the relevance of Turing's theoretical ideas to people producing actual machines was significant and appreciated by everybody involved in computing from the moment he published his 1936 paper ‘On Computable Numbers’. Careful historians are aware that this popular conception is deeply misleading. We know from previous work by Campbell-Kelly, Aspray, Akera, Olley, Priestley, Daylight, Mounier-Kuhn, Haigh, and others that several computing pioneers, including Aiken, Eckert, Mauchly, and Zuse, did not depend on Turing's 1936 universal-machine concept. Furthermore, (...)

  8. Individual and community in early Heidegger: Situating Das man , the man -self, and self-ownership in dasein's ontological structure.Edgar C. Boedeker - 2001 - Inquiry: An Interdisciplinary Journal of Philosophy 44 (1):63 – 99.
In Sein und Zeit , Heidegger claims that (1) das Man is an 'existential' i.e. a necessary feature of Dasein's Being; and (2) Dasein need not always exist in the mode of the Man -self, but can also be eigentlich , which I translate as 'self-owningly'. These apparently contradictory statements have prompted a debate between Hubert Dreyfus, who recommends abandoning (2), and Frederick Olafson, who favors jettisoning (1). I offer an interpretation of the structure of Dasein's Being compatible with both (...)

The Structural Narrative Analysis in Application: The Case of Meaning Explication.Olena Verbivska - 2023 - Filosofska Dumka (Philosophical Thought) 4:138-148.
This paper scrutinizes the topic of meaning manifestation and signification made known by the act of interpretation, which amounts to finding the organising principles of a text and rules of combination. The language of narrativity is a set of generational and transformational instances disguising textual content and initiating interpretation as such. The paper discusses the levels of description which assist in tackling the concept of change, or difference in degrees, as the result of both the artificial operation of rewriting the (...)

    The Emergence of Thought.Edgar Morin - 1991 - Diogenes 39 (155):135-146.
If we consider human thought as the, so far, ultimate, if not supreme, stage in the evolution of life on Earth, we must also try to understand the evolutionary conditions that allowed it to emerge, and that leads us to look again at living organization.Whatever the origins of life (cf. the text of Jacques Reisse, p. 53), it is clear that the oldest living organization, that of a protobacteria, is extremely complex in its functional and complementary association of extremely diverse (...)

Abstract: I discuss in this article the Leibnizian conception of the mind, showing that perceptions and sensations can be understood as constituting a continuous series, but that apperceptions forcibly introduce a discontinuity (...)
